Simple Turmeric Breakfast Pot

I love turmeric. It’s clever. Well … the curcumin in turmeric is the clever bit.

Not only can it give your immune system a bit of a boost if you need it, it also has the ability to calm it down if it’s over reacting.

An overactive immune system causes problems for anyone with autoimmune problems (such as psoriasis or arthritis) Drugs work to suppress the immune system, but turmeric is clever … it regulates it instead. So, eat turmeric! Add it to omelettes, juice the root and drink it with pear and ginger, sprinkle it into curries – just get more of it in your life.

Here’s another important tip … the body can absorb it 2000% better if it has piperine with it (that’s found in black pepper) So add that too!

Here’s a really simple breakfast pudding you can try …

Glass of almond or coconut milk

2 heaped tbsp chia seeds

2 tsp turmeric powder

2 tsp Manuka honey

1 tsp cacao powder

Pinch of black pepper

Stir the honey into the nut milk until it’s completely mixed in. You may need to warm it slightly to do this. Add a spoonful of turmeric and mix it in well. Careful not to get turmeric on stuff – it stains like crazy!! Add the second spoonful and mix again until it’s dissolved.

Stir the chia seeds in a spoonful at a time. They’ll begin to expand. Keep stirring them for about 5-10mins.

Spoon the turmeric pudding into a glass. I’ve layered mine with pomegranate seeds, mini kiwis and bee pollen (sounds posh but it’s all from Lidl!!)

Save a little turmeric pudding at the end. Add the cacao and pepper to this (you may need a drop more milk) Then spoon this on as the final layer of your pudding.

Leave in the fridge overnight or eat right away πŸ™‚

Haha great timing, I just posted about the health benefits of turmeric. I juice it but a lot of people have problems with the taste, this could be the answer! β˜ΊοΈπŸ‘πŸ»

Looks yummy. Have you ever tried it with fresh tumeric? Or do you know how much fresh I should use in this recipe (no worries if not I will try and Google it)?

    Hi Hanna,
Great post on the benefits of Turmeric. My girlfriend also has an overactive autoimmune system, hers is called ‘Gleich’. It is a very rare disease that few doctors know about, info on how to treat it and why it happens is difficult to find, which is very frustrating for us. It causes her body to swell up e.g. hers arms, legs, hands, groin, the area(s) also becomes hard, although its not painful, it does cause her discomfort e.g. bloating when wearing clothes.
This condition is treated by steriods, we are going and use more turmeric in our meals, can you explain please what you meant by ‘2000% better if it has piperine’, we don’t understand the link between that and black pepper?
Do you have any other suggestions of food or spices that would ‘calm’ down her immune system naturally as our long time objective is come off the steriods which she takes daily.
    Please advise,
    Thank you,
    Will.

PS,what is bee pollen and mini kiwis? Going to try Lidl for some πŸ€”

      Hello Will,

      Thanks so much for your comment. I must admit Gleich is something I have never heard of – but will now research! So many autoimmune illnesses share the same traits. Does she already avoid Nightshades? If not, that’s definitely something for her to consider. Great explanation here;

With lots of vitamins and nutrients the body likes to have a combination of things for better absorption. Calcium for example is useless without Magnesium. Yes, we can increase the amount we consume, but it’s pointless if our body can’t make use of it. That’s the same with curcumin – the important stuff in turmeric. Piperine (in black pepper) helps the body make curcumin useful. So it’s important to eat the two things together. Think, turmeric omelette with black pepper πŸ™‚ It’s also better to use black pepper that you grind yourself as oppose to the ready ground stuff which is often highly refined. The pepper kernels are easy to buy and you can just use a peppermill to grind them.

It’s important for her to concentrate on resetting her immune system. Doctors often talk about suppressing (steroids) but the key I’ve found is to regulate and rebuild. Shiitake mushrooms are another fantastic food which have this awesome ability.

Aside from this … lots of greens, lots of alkaline food (google acid / alkaline chart) and if you’re interested in reading more there are a few book recommendations … Dr John Pagano writes specifically about psoriasis but his book is interesting for all autoimmune disorders. Paul Pitchford has written an incredible book called Healing with Whole Foods. It’s huge and full of amazing information combining Asian and Modern Nutrition. The PH Miracle by Robert O Young is a great introduction to alkaline eating and the Alkaline Cure is another one of my favourites with fantastic starter recipe ideas.

Bee Pollen is amazing stuff. Best to buy it online in the UK. A lot of effort goes into making just a tiny amount of this stuff by the bees – so please consume mindfully.

Mini kiwis … never seen them before but they’re fab! Just like big kiwis but with a smooth, edible skin. Bear in mind I’m in Spain at the moment and Lidl UK might vary in terms of stock πŸ™‚ Seems you can grow them at home though!

Hope all this is useful info. I think it’s amazing you’re helping your girlfriend beat her autoimmune illness. Keep me posted on her success coming off steroids.
